If you’re into textiles and looking for a memorable evening out, Hexagon Quilters is the place for you.
The Hexagon Quilters group invites well-known quilters and textile artists to speak and give workshops, and we also organise coach trips to exhibitions such as the Festival of Quilts.
Please feel free to explore our website by clicking on the buttons above or below.
Hexagon Quilters is based in the Reading area, although some of our members live as far away as Wallingford and Maidenhead.
The group was formed in 1990 for the purpose of attracting well-known quilters to speak and give workshops, and to organise coach trips to exhibitions such as the Festival of Quilts. It also acts as a hub for disseminating information on local and national quilting activities. Most Hexagon members are members of other smaller quilting groups as well, for regular sewing sessions.
There are normally six meetings per year. Five of these feature Guest Speakers, the sixth is an "Evening of Business & Pleasure". You can find out about forthcoming speakers in the Programme section.
We meet at Charvil Village Hall, generally on the 3rd Thursday of February, April, June, September and November. Doors open at 7:30pm. Inevitably there is a bit of a queue at the door. Members and visitors are signed in (fire regulations) and subscriptions and visitor fees change hands. Once beyond this hurdle you have several choices.
Programmes giving details of the year's events are available at the Welcome Table, which you pass as you enter the Hall. There are notices to read, the trader to visit, second-hand magazines to buy, library books to exchange, raffle tickets to buy or friends to gossip with. The notice board is for anyone to advertise anything "quilt" related. This is the place to look for local classes, house groups to join, workshops and exhibition details.
At around 8pm we take our seats for the main part of the evening, our Guest Speaker. We begin with any announcements, and it is a good idea to have your diary and a notebook handy. We will also try to post any announcements on the website after the meeting.
When the speaker has finished their talk, they are generally happy to answer questions from members, and let them study quilts or other items. After the last question a member thanks our guest for what is usually an excellent talk or show. We then have a "Show and Tell" - your opportunity to show everyone your latest creation.
Before the meeting closes we have tea/coffee and a biscuit, and another chance to buy from the trader and borrow from the library. The raffle is drawn at around 9:30pm and prizes may include fabric pieces, sewing notions and books. The raffle proceeds are donated to the President's chosen charity of the year.
We usually follow the meeting with a workshop from our guest speaker. This has to be booked in advance as there are a limited number of places. It normally takes place on the Friday immediately after the meeting, and is held at The Cornerstone in Wokingham.
In January, the first meeting of the year (our members only AGM) provides an interesting mix of formal business as well as competitions, exhibited work and bring and buy. Subscription renewal takes place at this time. New members can join at any time, but our membership is limited to 150 and each year we come very close to meeting this. The easiest way to join Hexagon Quilters is to come along to a meeting!
Thinking of joining us?
As a visitor, the cost of attending a meeting is £7.00. If you decide you would like to join, membership is open to everyone whatever their level of expertise or ability. Membership is currently £20.00 per year (a sliding scale if you join at a later meeting) and, if you join at the meeting, the £7.00 cost will be deducted from your membership fee. Non-members may also attend workshops (although members have first opportunity to book a place) at a cost of £30.00 per workshop.
